Ayia Napa was once a modest settlement of fishermen, where the only attraction was the monastery Ayyas Napas. According to legend, many centuries ago on this place grew impenetrable forests, where often hunted residents of nearby villages. One day one of them in this one came across a cave in which the ancient icon of the Virgin Mary was kept. People considered this a good sign and since then they began to build their homes here. And they called this place Ayia Napa, which means "Sacred forests".
It was in the place where the icon was found that the church appeared in due course, and in the 16th century a monastery was erected near the church. The initiator of its construction was the daughter of a noble nobleman, who, because of unhappy love and the impossibility of unequal marriage, decided to leave the worldly vanity and serve God. This monastery became one of the most significant on the whole island, but after several hundred years it fell into decay and was abandoned.
In the middle of the courtyard is located "Fountain House" of precious marble, where the founder of the monastery was buried, in addition, many tourists are attracted to the chapel located there. Of particular note is the veil that Jesus Christ transmitted to St. Veronica when he went to Calvary. And at one of the walls of the monastery a magnificent mulberry tree grows, which, according to local residents, is more than six hundred years old.
