Tourists stay tens of thousands in Cyprus at the beginning of the season, despite the financial crisis. However, their total spending is far from helping the economy of the Mediterranean island to get out of the recession.
In April, 189,000 travelers visited Cyprus, which is 27,000 more than last year. According to the aggregate information coming from tour operators, airlines and hotels, this indicator will also exceed the last year's result to a great extent in the summer season.
Last year the island was visited by two and a half million tourists who brought the local economy 1, 92 billion EUR (10 , 5% of the gross domestic product) . This year this amount could grow by 20% . However, this positive outlook was disappointing not all local representatives of trade and hotel business . First of all, many tours are sold off prices, and secondly, tourists increasingly prefer to travel to Cyprus through the "all-inclusive" system . Result: numerous restaurants and cafes are threatened with closure due to lack of customers on the one hand and tough economic measures from another .
