About religion

In India, Hinduism is very common. According to this religion, the highest meaning of life is to achieve spiritual enlightenment. In the vastness of the country, you can meet a sadhu, or an Indian recluse, who preaches a pure form of religion. When dealing with sadhus, as well as when visiting Indian temples, you must follow certain rules:

  • Before entering the Indian house (especially the temple), take off your shoes.
  • Do not wear clothes that are too open.
  • Temples and religious monuments in India are only circumvented clockwise.
  • Traditionally, a sadhu can offer you an offering: do not refuse to accept it.
  • Traveling spiritual teachers are usually given a small amount of money as a sign of respect and gratitude. Do not fall for the bait of pseudo-teachers and just charlatans: a real sadhu will never ask you for a donation or other compensation for communication.

On hygiene

Your concepts of hygiene are likely to be very different from those that you will encounter in India. In the manic care of cleanliness is not worth it, however it is recommended to pay more attention to the rules of personal hygiene. For example, you need to wash your hands regularly, and in cases where you are not sure about the quality of water, use wet antibacterial napkins (an indispensable thing in India!).

If you are cut or burned, carefully treat the wound. Please note that in a humid climate, the treatment of burns and cuts will take a little longer. As for food, some travelers advise carrying a plastic "fork-spoon" set (if desired, also a mug), as well as not eating food cooked in a hurry and without heat treatment.

On the street

The concept of "market relations" in India is of a literal nature: it is customary in Indian markets to bargain and ask for a better price.

Be also prepared for the fact that there are many homeless and beggars in India, and sometimes their pathetic kind is a game "to the public".

Hindus - people are very good-natured. They rarely get angry (except when you insult their shrines). Alone or in a group, a white tourist always attracts the attention of local villagers. Nevertheless, too cheeky behavior is worth stopping, because. it is unlikely to lead to anything good.

Do not wear clothes that are too open (especially for women). In order to avoid sexual harassment, it is better for women to appear on Indian streets accompanied by a chevalier. In addition, you should not walk in crowded places in the dark.

In general, the local population is attuned to visitors very kindly, and if you observe simple rules you will get a lot of pleasure from communicating with the original Indian culture.
