Add a review about Vilnius Cathedral

The most beautiful cathedral reminds classical temples of Ancient Greece. It is believed that in its place until the XIII century stood the temple of the pagan god Thunderer Perkūnas, on whose altar the fire burned day and night to please the severe master of lightning. The first cathedral was built at the beginning of the XIII century by King Mindhouse, who adopted Christianity for establishing relations with the Livonian Order.

Afterwards, the temple suffered several times from floods and fires, suffered large-scale destruction and changed its appearance in the process of numerous restorations. . And only in 1990, when the cathedral was returned by the Soviet authorities of the Roman Catholic Church and the grandiose restoration work was completed, the building took on a modern look . The interior decoration of the cathedral has a great artistic value frescoes, paintings of the 16th-19th centuries - more than 40 works of art . In the ground floor there is a museum of history in which exhibits from pagan times up to our time are exhibited .
