In Luxembourg, despite the huge number of pompous palaces, gloomy castle ruins and graceful churches, one of the main attractions since 1933 has been and remains casemates Bock. Even if you came to the capital of a dwarf state for only half a day and together with you a man from 5 to 85 years old is a must-visit place. Now you will understand why.
The casemates that appeared on the underground map in the 17th century stretched out in the depths of the Le Bock rock under the once existing Luxembourg fortress as much as 23 km. What they are: mysterious moves and pivot points, frighteningly dark chambers and bunches of light making their way through the windows in the rock, as well as unexpected exits to the "surface" at a height of 100 m. The views that open from these very windows and "balconies" just fantastic. As the canyon of the Petrus River and the old quarter of Ram.
During the Second World War the casemates did not stand idle: they served to protect civilians from air raids, because their depth reaches an impressive 40 m. Today, from many ancient houses of the city still conduct underground passages to the casemates of Bok.
To date, only 17 km from 23 underground tunnels have been preserved - the rest has been disassembled points during the demolition of the fortress of Luxembourg. But what remains is more than enough for a romantic, full of mysteries and legends excursion. The casemates of Bock (the most famous and, according to eyewitnesses, interesting) are open for tourists, which could be visited since 1933.
Find casemates Bok is not difficult - the rock is visible from almost any part of the city center, the entrance is near the river Alzet. The excursion program also often includes a visit to the archaeological crypt, where unique finds from the walls of the casemates are exhibited.
