Northern neighbor of Mdina, Rabat in the past was a part of the Roman city of Melita.

Rabat served as a refuge for monastic orders for many centuries. To this day, communities and monasteries of Franciscans, Dominicans and Augustinian flourish here.

In addition, Rabat is known for its holy catacombs - the underground tombs of the 4th century of St. Paul and St. Agatha. By the way, the town has a second name - Victoria.

Not far from Rabat is the summer residence of Magister de la Verdal - Veralda Castle
