The National Center for Contemporary Art (NCCA) opened its branch office in Kaliningrad in 1997. The Kaliningrad branch was called "Baltic", it was intended for the whole region, but predictability ended there.
Kaliningrad has always been famous for its active cultural life, and therefore the number of museums in it is not surprising. Some of them are old, some very young, and this is also good: it means that museums are not just preserved - they are developing and growing. Now in Kaliningrad, you can find a museum event for almost every taste: from classical painting to the avant-garde, from Roman antiquities to the traces of the last war.
The appearance of some museums is determined by the geographical location of the city. This, for example, the Museum of the World Ocean - a new, good, large museum, which appeared only a few years ago. In his exposition a lot of materials devoted to the history of navigation in the region, but the most interesting here is the court. These ships, decommissioned from the fleet and transferred to the museum - at different branches. The most famous is probably the icebreaker Krasin. But besides him there is a lot of everything, there is even a submarine, and you can go to every ship.
Another very interesting place is Lodeiny Dvor. This is also one of the branches of the Museum of the World Ocean, located in a separate building. There is a historic shipyard here - they create old ships based on old technologies, you can see how ships were built two hundred or three hundred years ago.
In general, all the museums of the city are rather modern: a lot of international events are taking place, many museums received All-Russian awards, almost all participate in the national action "Museum Night".
Kaliningrad was once called Koenigsberg and was part of Prussia, so many museums have Prussian collections.
So, one more interesting exposition is in the Kaliningrad regional historical and art museum. There is a wonderful archeological collection here, and there is nothing strange about it - except for local finds, the part of the collection of the Prussian Museum, which was once considered one of the best archaeological museums in the world and covered almost the entire material history of mankind, got there.
This museum has several branches, including the Sculpture Park, the Kristiyonas Donelaitis Museum (it is located in the village of Chistye Prudy in the Nesterovo District, there are several buildings there) and two military memorials dedicated to the Second World War - "Blindage" and "Fort № 5 ". The sculpture park is located in a large and very interesting arboretum.
One of the most famous buildings of the city is the Koenigsberg Cathedral. The building was rebuilt after the start of perestroika, preserving its former name, and now the Immanuel Kant Museum (it was once the rector of the local university), the Museum of the History of the Cathedral and one of the best in Russia organ halls peacefully coexist.
A special place is occupied by the museum "Friedland gates" - a museum of antiques found during the improvement of the city in old houses, in basements and during the clearing of reservoirs.
In Kaliningrad, a large picture gallery specializing in contemporary art. There are several sections of graphics in it (mostly the Russian beginning of the 20th century, again Prussian and modern regional) and a remarkable section "Folk crafts", very large and bright.
The most famous and famous museum of Kaliningrad for the whole country is, of course, the Amber Museum. A great collection, one of the best. In nature, as is known, there are no two identical pieces of amber. Therefore, you can look at the exhibits endlessly, and each time there will be something new, not seen before, - this is the property of amber - not open immediately. In the collection - both products and unprocessed pieces of amber.
The National Center for Contemporary Arts (NCCA), which conducts interesting events in the avant-garde sphere, will soon become a museum of contemporary art.
The Kaliningrad Zoo is also famous. One of the three oldest zoos in Russia, you can see more than 3,500 animals, and it is located on the territory of a good dendrarium with a large collection of rare plants. There are very rare animals, such as snow leopards.
All the museums of the city are actively developing, and there are new interesting expositions. Their collections are increasing, research is being conducted. In general, there is a rather modern focus: many international events take place in Kaliningrad museums, many museums take part in competitions and have already received all-Russian awards, modern all-Russian events are held here - almost all the museums in the city participate in the national action "Museum Night".
