In the historical center of the city, at the confluence of the Om River in Irtysh, the ruins of the Second Omsk Fortress rise. From the first fortress built in 1716, which was practically not preserved, there were only the Tarski Gates on the northern fortress line, restored in 1991 on the old foundation, and the Tobolsk Gates are the only ones that have survived to this day.
Not far from the fortress is located the oldest building in Omsk - the building of the guardhouse of the late 18th century in the Baroque style. It is worth to visit a beautiful complex of buildings - the Palace of the Governor-General, where one of the buildings of the Historical and Local History Museum is located, as well as the Siberian Cadet Corps in the style of classicism.
We recommend to take a look at the biggest temple of the city - the Assumption Cathedral in the center of Omsk. The temple was built in the late 19th century, and then destroyed under Soviet rule. Recently, in 2007, the cathedral was rebuilt. Examples of Baroque style are the Holy Cross Cathedral, erected in 1870 for donations, and the 18th-century Lutheran church is one of the most beautiful buildings in Omsk. A Christ-Christmas Cathedral, with a dome height of 40 meters, is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Urals.
