History and features
The city of Porkhov is located in the Shelonsky Lowland, on the Shelon River, which is in the basin of Lake Ilmen, the Pskov Region. At first it was a fortress, absolutely necessary as a defensive structure on the border with the Lithuanian principality. The military exploits of the city remained in the distant past, but history tells us that in the old days Porkhov was among the twelve key fortresses of the Russian state.
The Second World War did not spare the city, only three buildings remained intact, so there is no need to talk about historical objects in the city. But in the vicinity of Porkhov there is something to look at the curious tourist.
Entertainment, excursions and attractions Porkhova
On the shore there is a fortress with a pentagonal shape, fortifications - stone walls and three towers in a dilapidated state. On the walls you can go through the existing in them aisles. Inside the fortress there is a garden with the restored Nikolsky Fortress in 1777 and the Museum of Local Lore. Outside the fortress wall there are two churches - the Transfiguration of the Savior and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin.
Fortress Porkhova
The fortress stands on the shore of Sheloni and looks today almost the same as it looked in the first half of the 15th century. Originally wooden, later stone, it sustained a lot of Lithuanian sieges and has survived to the present day in good condition.
The peculiarity of the fortress is that it was built immediately, rather than in stages. Thick walls, up to 2 meters, end in the upper part of the battlefield, the towers are equipped with narrow windows, from which it is convenient to observe the surroundings, the gates of the fortress impress with their might.
Because of the changing borders, the fortress quickly ceased to be necessary in the military plan, so it remained exactly what it was built. Today it remains the main decoration of the quiet provincial town of Porkhov and its main historical landmark. Not all the territory of the fortress is now shown in the proper form, serious investments are required that would make this structure even more attractive.
Entrance to the fortress is carried out from 10.00 to 18.00 for a symbolic fee of 20 rubles.
Museum of Porkhov
In the fortress there is the Porkhovsky Museum of the History of the Territory (Lenin street, 1, tel .: (81134) 2-36-42, 2-35-82 - House of Crafts, working hours: 10: 00-18: 00; ). His exposition is very interesting and informative, and the exhibits of the collection dedicated to the development of the postal service are illustrative illustrations for the excursion. Some of them can be considered as interactive, for example, a pen with a feather, which must be dipped in an inkwell. For young travelers the inscription of several words with such a pen turns into an amazing attraction.
The exposition "History of the city of Porkhov" and "Edge in the years of the Great Patriotic War" were opened in the fortress. The original route "The path of health - medicinal herbs" was developed. In the exhibition hall the exhibition "Manors of Porkhov Uyezd" was opened, in the House of Crafts - an exhibition of products of masters of folk crafts (unique products - weaving from weeds, weaving from grass - art almost lost today).
Neighborhoods Porkhova
It is worth exploring Volyshovo - the former estate and stud farm Stroganoffs; Holomki - Belskoye estuary - former estates of Gagarins, Vasilchikovs; Nikandrov desert, where the sources are preserved, the chapel; recreated Malakhovsky partisan camp, which is an open-air museum with an interactive complex (partisan observation post, canteen, bathhouse, dugout).
Stroganov Manor
If you move from Porkhov to Velikiye Luk, at a distance of 18 km from the city you can see the estate of the Stroganoff Counts .The size of the estate is huge, before the revolution of 1917 it was among the ten largest in Russia, on its territory a lot of buildings .The main house is boarded up (but the locals willingly show how you can penetrate it), and in the outbuildings people still live .The buildings are in neglected condition .The huge park keeps traces of the former regular planning .In general, the estate is a vivid illustration of how great is the potential of Russia's tourism .
Manor of Kozhinykh-Novosiltsevs
In 2 km from the village of Holomka there is the Manor of Kozhiny-Novosiltsevy Belskoe Ustye. Here stayed and worked GS Vereisky, KI Chukovsky, EI Zamyatin, VF Khodasevich, MM Zoshchenko, ML Slonimsky. The beautiful Voznesenskaya church has been preserved in the estate, which is now being restored, which makes it impossible to see it in all its glory. This is one of the largest patrimonial churches in the Pskov region.
Manor of Holomka
The homeland of Holomka is located far from the road, in a quiet place. Only the main house is preserved - a palace in the classical style. After the end of the external restoration works, it looks extremely attractive. At one time the owner of the estate was Prince Gagarin, the first rector of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.
Nikandrovskaya desert
Nikandrovskaya desert (50 km west of Porkhov towards Pskov), founded in the 16th century, was one of the richest monasteries in the Pskov region. To date, it represents a deplorable sight: it was destroyed almost completely under Soviet rule. And yet the desert is not abandoned, pilgrims often come here, because it is known for its miraculous springs. Here, only the foundations of the churches and the remnants of the fortress wall were preserved. Not so long ago, the restoration of the monastery church and restoration of some buildings was started.
Other estates near Porkhov
Near the village of Krasnye Gorki there are ruins of the Countess Stroganova's estate "Knyazhy Gorki" and the church of Elijah. In their best years, these buildings were wonderful examples of Neo-Gothic - the first, and the Empire - the second.
Alexandrovo, the Korsakov-Viskovaty estate, is located in the village of Aleksandrovo and is a typical manor complex of the 18th century. Until now, the main manor house has been preserved, surrounded by a park of coniferous trees of various breeds and the Spassky church built in 1791. The estate is a monument of federal significance.
Dulag-110
During the cult of personality in the territory of the Pskov region there were many concentration camps. In memory of that terrible stage in the life of the country, the Dulag-110 memorial complex was created. The chapel and the worship cross immortalized the memory of those who died innocently not only in this camp, but throughout the entire Pskov region.
