On January 1, 1993 Czechoslovakia was divided into two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The capital of the Slovak Republic was Bratislava. Until this year, from 1969 to 1992, it was the main city of the Slovak Socialist Republic as part of Czechoslovakia. And even earlier, from 1939 to 1945, was the capital of the First Slovak Republic, the allied fascist Germany. This republic occupied a significant part of the territory of modern Slovakia, excluding the southeastern regions controlled by Hungary.
Bratislava itself for a long time, from 907 to 1918, was part of Hungary, and even the capital of that country (from 1536 to 1784) . Then the city was more known as Pozhon (from the 10th century) and Presburg (until the 20th century). From 1919 to 1939, and then from 1945 to 1992, Bratislava, already under its own name, was one of the administrative units of Czechoslovakia
