Castel de Bellver Castle is another masterpiece of Gothic art. It is built a few kilometers from Palma de Mallorca and is the only building in Gothic style in Spain with an unusual round shape. The history of the castle begins in the 14th century when Aragonese King Jaime II decided to build in a picturesque area hilly Mallorca its ancestral nest. However, a few centuries later, Belver lost the status of a monarch's dwelling. In the 18th century, the castle was used as a prison, among its inmates was the famous Spanish writer Gaspard Melchor de Hovelianos.
