Cuisine and Restaurants
Despite the fact that the Leon cuisine is very diverse , here you can identify several traditional dishes, such as smoked beef (Cecina), blood sausage (morcilla), garlic soup or vegetable soup with noodles.
Local chefs pay special attention to baking - many recipes came from ancient monasteries, where pilgrims usually traveled to Santiago de Compostela. Hence the corresponding names: yemas de Santa Teresa (sweets from egg yolks), toscas de la Virgen and bizcochos de San Lorenzo (biscuit cakes).
Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Leon
Once, Leon defended the powerful Roman walls of stone and coal. Most of these structures have survived to this day. The main city square Plaza Mayor used to be a platform for bullfighting, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays it turned into a market. Today it is the center of the night life of the city. Still worth a look at the area Grano, Regla and Guzmán el Bueno.
- Attend a master class dedicated to the preparation of local dishes.
- Admire the luxurious interior of the most French of all the Spanish cathedrals, not forgetting to look into the inner courtyard - the club.
- Find the nest of the stork on the ancient Roman column.
- Sit on his knees at the bronze pilgrim, "resting" in the San Marcos Square.
- To migrate 500 years ago on an incredibly authentic Market Square.
- Come to Leon's Cathedral late at night and enjoy its magnificent night lighting.
The main must-see among the architectural monuments:
- St. Mary's Cathedral, built in the 13th century on the site of the ancient Roman temple of Mercury
- The Basilica of St. Isidore, formerly a school of jewelers who worked with precious stones and ivory
- The Monastery of Saint Mark (San Marcos Parador) is the building with the longest facade executed in the style of the "Plateresque" of the Spanish Renaissance.
Finally, the hand of master Antonio Gaudi worked on the appearance of the city - here he was designed and built Casa de los Botines in neoclassical style.
Developments
The summer solstice in León traditionally coincides with a large-scale citywide celebration, timed to coincide with the day of the two apostles - John and Peter - on June 24 and 28 respectively, although the saints are not the patrons of the city. The central streets are filled with crowds of locals and tourists who burn fires, give each other flowers and participate in musical performances. Within 10 days from June 20 to June 30 there are bullfights, fairs and theatrical performances.
Another city holiday - St Froilán - is celebrated on Sunday before October 5th. Plaza del Grano, Plaza de Regla (opposite the Cathedral) and all the streets in the old quarter are decorated with historic flags and banners, horse-drawn carts. All events are devoted to the ancient city customs and are accompanied by mass tasting of blood sausage.
