A little history

Valladolid turned into a town from the village and began to thrive in the 11th century, and in 1469 Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon married here and elected the city as their residence. Later, in 1561, the capital was moved to Madrid. It was during this period in Valladolid that one of the most famous Spaniards in the world, the great writer Cervantes, lived here, his novel "Don Quixote" was published for the first time.

Nowadays, in the house where Cervantes lived and worked, there is a memorial museum: the rooms were restored in their original form, they collected the personal belongings of the writer. There is another remarkable memorial museum in the city - the Christopher Columbus Museum, where documents and things related to his life and dramatic travel are presented

Climate

There is a city at the confluence of the rivers Pisuerga and Esgueva, in a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, o which the Spaniards say: "six months of winter and six months of hell." From all sides, this city is surrounded by mountains that protect it from winds and rains, but often provoke extreme weather events. Spring and autumn are usually rainy, dry summers, (on average, its temperature is about +25 ° C), and in winter it is quite cool, frosts and fogs are not unusual.

Valladolid Hotels

Many modern and elegant hotels built in this ancient city , most of which can boast of four stars on the facade. However, there are also apartments for rent and a couple of hostels.

Interesting facts

Modern Valladolid is one of the largest industrial centers in Spain. There are many different enterprises here: machine-building plants, chemical enterprises, aluminum smelting complex. The city is also famous for its numerous jewelry factories and wineries, which produce from the fruits of the surrounding vineyards famous Castillian wines world-wide.

Valladolid is not only a notable industrial center in Spain, but also a university one. It should be noted that the local university is one of the oldest in Europe: it was founded in 1346, and its first building was built in the late 15th century. In the 18th century the building received a new Baroque façade and still serves as one of the city's adornments. The current reality is that there are about 30,000 students in 13 faculties at the university

Cuisine and restaurants

The tourist business brings considerable income to the city treasury . Every year several hundred thousand tourists come to Valladolid . Of course, in the first their turn attracts the city's attractions, but one of the subjects of interest is the local cuisine . The firm dish - the meat of a very young lamb cooked on slow fire - is very popular among tourists . In addition, local cuisine is represented in the numerous restaurants of the city with a variety of dishes with the addition of asparagus, chicory, beans, lentils and mushrooms . To drink all this is recommended, of course, with excellent local wines .

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Valladolid

On the background of industrial enterprises, fortunately, numerous historical and architectural sights of the city are not lost. The old part of the city here is carefully preserved in its original form, and it is here that a large number of iconic buildings, both secular and religious, are concentrated. It is in this area of the city that the unfinished Cathedral is located. Its construction began in the 16th century, then it was suspended, and work on the front part of the Cathedral was completed only in 1730.

Next to it is the 13th-century church of Santa Maria la Antigua, built in Romanesque style. Its slender bell tower attracts attention with its grace and unusual architecture. Of great interest are also the churches of St. Benedict, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Michael and St. Anna Monastery, which owns the famous paintings of the great Spanish artist Francisco Goya.

3 things to do in Valladolid
  1. Look inside the museum of the famous seafarer Christopher Columbus
  2. Fill up with caloric, but extremely delicious dishes of Castilian cuisine
  3. See the pictures belonging to Goya's brush at St. Anne's monastery

The heart of the old city is the Plaza Mayor. Its architectural ensemble was formed in the 16th century and still pleases its eyes with its completeness. One of the most significant on the square is the building of the city municipality, which, incidentally, is open for free inspection at certain hours.

The Palace of Los Piemintel also attracts tourists with its architecture and historical significance: here in 1527 the king was born Philip II. In the 19th century another very attractive architectural ensemble was formed in the city: the street of Acera de Recoletos, one of the main streets of Valladolid. It is a complete complex of buildings with generously but harmoniously decorated facades

An excellent addition to the sightseeing of city attractions can be participation in the celebration of Easter and Holy Week. Sermons read on the central square of the city, solemn processions, horse march along the central streets - all this is very picturesque and makes an indelible impression. However, it should be noted that this is a purely religious event that requires a very tactful attitude, especially since the Catholic traditions in Valladolid are very strong.
