Add a comment about the Hollywood sign

White letters forming the inscription HOLLYWOOD, surrounded by lush green slopes of Mount Mount Lee - without exaggeration the most recognizable sign of the "locality" on the planet and besides the only one having its own Internet site. Symbol of the Dream Factory, Los Angeles, California and, often, of all States, the inscription "Hollywood" first appeared in 1923 - and for the past almost a century it has repeatedly become the object of ridicule, an occasion for curious scandals and cinematic scenery.

A bit of history

The history of the most famous sign began in 1923 . Then nobody thought about the Dream Factory, the neighborhoods of Los Angeles were uninhabited hectares of land with total absence of any comforts . With the beginning of the construction boom, demand but land, and then enterprising agents began to sell plots outside the city . The inscription "Hollywood" and was created to attract the attention of buyers to suburban land lots . The sign had to stand just a year and a half, but here in the sky of world cinema the star of the Hollywood film studio went up, and they decided to leave the inscription, dropping the ending "-lend" .

With the passage of time, the sign was decrepit that it did not go unnoticed by the stars of Hollywood. In 1978, nine representatives of American show business shared the cost of restoring the inscription - by letter to "nose". New letters were made from super strong (and expensive) Australian steel - and the old ones were sold at auction for a round sum of 450 thousand USD.
