Some history

The city was named after its founder, Eugene Skinner , who built here the first hut. Later, when Eugene was already considered a city, Skinner launched a ferry across the Willamette River - the place where the Ferry Street Bridge stands today. The main impetus to the development of Eugene was the opening in 1876 of the university, which turned an unremarkable little town into a promising place.
