The provincial town of Mikkeli is located on the shore of Lake Saimaa and is an important transport hub in South Savo. During the Second World War, Mikkeli was the headquarters of the Finnish army, and it was from here that Marshal Mannerheim directed the Finnish campaign against the Soviets. Now the city's former glory, awarded the Order of the Cross of Freedom, is recalled by its numerous museums. However, Mikkeli is still an important military base, and the soldiers here sometimes seem to be even more than civilians.
Mikkeli Tourist Office is located at Porrassalmenkatu 15 and is open to visitors from 09:00 to 18:00 from Monday on Friday and from 10:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays
