A bit of history

Being one of the oldest settlements in Finland, the history of Savonlinna is closely connected with the history of another fortress - Olavinlinna, founded by the Swedes in 1475. In 1534 the walls of the fortress were renewed and reinforced, it became the center of the province of Savo. In 1639 Savonlinna received the status of the city, followed by wars, dramatic sieges, changes of rulers, and in 1811 - annexation to Finland.

Since 1475 in the city stands the fortress of Olavinlinna. In the old days, it served as a Swedish frontier post. Its powerful walls have seen much, they look very harsh and mysterious. This did not prevent the fortress from taking an important place in the cultural life of Finland: since 1912 it hosts annual international opera festivals, which gather participants from different countries of Europe.

Well-placed voices sound in the old stone walls especially brightly, the spectators get a real pleasure listening to the opera arias.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Savonlinna

The City Dome Cathedral was badly damaged during the war, in the 90s of the last century it was renovated, restored and equipped with a new 45-voice organ. From June 6 to August 21, the cathedral is open daily from 11.00 to 19.00, and at other times of the year - during the hours of services that take place on Sundays at 10.00 and during church music concerts, which take place on Wednesdays at 12.00.

The role of the tourist promenade is performed in this city by Linnakatu Street. In 18 it was central in the city, on this street houses built in the 19th century that allow you to plunge into the atmosphere of the old life, and the numerous boutiques of famous brands, cozy cafes and souvenir shops remind that in the yard the 21st century with its problems, rules and traditions.

On the same street there are several exhibition halls offering to get acquainted with the creations of modern Finnish designers, usually somewhat original, but considered all over the world a model of functionality and a modern approach to decorating art.

The fortress of Olavinlinna

The fortress and its two museums, which have an extensive collection of weapons and art treasures, are open all year round. It is interesting that some rooms of the fortress are leased for meetings and symposiums, and it is rather amusing to see in the old halls the presentation of projects and works devoted to the contemporary problems of the development of information and communication technologies, the use of new methods of processing raw materials or creating new vehicles.

Museums of Savonlinna

Open to the guests and the doors of the city museums .First of all, this is a local history museum and a fishing museum .A lot of interesting documents and curious exhibits contain their collections, a visit to these museums will help to better understand the peculiarities of life in this region .Another very interesting museum has in its collection more than 2,000 exhibits, and all of them are puppets .Unique porcelain beauties made back in the 18th century, and modern long-legged plastic creations are staggering by their disparity and suggest that there is something mysterious about the dolls .
