In the old center of Ohrid not far from the sea coast is the ancient Hellenic amphitheater. It was discovered relatively recently and quite by accident. And yet the construction dates back to the 200th year BC. Strangely enough, but the amphitheater has remained quite decently. Nowadays, there are magical musical evenings on his stage.
In view of the fact that Ohrid is considered the oldest Macedonian city, it is no wonder that the ancient amphitheater was discovered on its lands. The structure belongs to the Hellenic, and not Roman architecture, in spite of the fact that the Roman amphitheatres in the Balkans are much more widespread. True, the difference between them is not so obvious, and even more so now, when you have to deal only with the ruins.
According to the calculations of the researchers, the Amphitheater of Ohrid was founded several centuries before the beginning of our era. The location of the construction is ideal: it lies between two hills, protecting it from the winds, but not obstructing the view of the sea. Excellent acoustic characteristics of the amphitheater have remained to this day. Unfortunately, the design was not preserved completely: until our time, I lived only in the lower tier. Therefore, to calculate the original capacity of the auditorium is very problematic.
During the Roman Empire, the amphitheater was used primarily for gladiatorial fights. And later it turned into a place of public executions. Probably, because of this, the locals did not like him and even after the collapse of the Roman Empire they completely forgot. Surprisingly, it was this fact that allowed the amphitheater to survive.
Since the 80's. This century, the Amphitheater of Ohrid was actively used as a venue for concerts, ballet, opera and theater productions. On his stage are the world stars, in particular, the famous tenor Jose Carreras. Every year, the summer festival of Ohrid is held in the amphitheater.
Visit The Amphitheater of Ohrid is completely free. Note that in addition to the very attractions it is interesting to admire the panorama of the city. The center of Ohrid to the amphitheater is the Abas-Emin route. Next, at the fork in the vicinity of the Villa Forum hotel, it is necessary to turn to Braka Miladinovtsi Street
Another epic landmark near the amphitheater is the fortress of Samuilova Strongina. And in the vicinity - a lot of hotels and restaurants. We recommend that you spend at least a day on the inspection of the historical part of Ohrid
