The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco unites a museum founded in 1889 by the Prince of Monaco Albert I, and the Oceanographic Institute, which opened in 1906. The museum has a remarkable collection of various items related to the sea and marine affairs: models of ships, naval instruments, weapons, effigies and skeletons of many kinds of marine fauna, etc.
The aquarium is located in the basement of the building. There are about 4000 species of fish and 200 species of invertebrates inhabiting the tropics and the Mediterranean Sea. Since 1957 the museum director has been Jacques Ives Cousteau
