In the very center of Ulan Bator there is a bright pearl of architecture and history of Mongolia - the temple complex Choydzhin-Lama or Mongolian Choyzhin Lamyn Sum, built in the 20th century under the residence of the state oracle Luvsanheydav, brother VIII Bogdo-Khan Jabzundamba.
The construction of the temple complex began in 1904 under the guidance of the architect Ombogiin, inspired in his work by the creativity of Chinese architects. On one ornaments of the complex, 2 tons of pure silver were consumed. The construction was completed four years later and until 1938, when religious institutions were closed all over the country, the church remained operational.
Perhaps, Choyzhin Lamyn Sum would not survive to this day and was demolished during the years of Mongolian repression if in its premises in 1942, it was decided not to organize an anti-religious museum, which later turned into a "Museum of the History of Religion", also called a museum of Tibetan-Mongolian religious art.
The exterior view of the museum halls, and to this day working in the temple complex Choyzhin Lamyn Sum, is as close as possible to the situation that could be seen in life Luvsanheidawa. In the richest exposition of the museum, many religious accessories belonging to Tibetan Buddhism are preserved. Among them are the most beautiful tank drawings, a collection of masks for the Tsam ceremonies, many volumes brought from Tibet with Buddhist canons and commentaries.
Temples Choyzhin Lamyn Suma
There are 5 temples on the territory of the complex. In the main of them are such relics as the statue of Buddha Shakyamuni created in the 18th century, the statue of Luvsanheidav and the statue of Baldanchoymbolon, the teacher of Bogdo Khan, with his mummified remains inside. In Hongkhang (the Temple of the Divine Preservers), behind the main hall is the oracle throne and the delightful statue of Yab-yum.
The first of the whole complex was the temple of Zuu, created in honor of the Buddha Shakyamuni. Here you can see 3 Buddha statues made of papier-mâché.
In the temple of Yadam, there were once various rituals, and now there is a collection of bronze and wooden Buddha statues, some of which were created by the famous artist and sculptor, the first Mongolian Bogdo-gegen Zanabazar.
In Amgalan - the Temple of Welfare - there is a self-portrait of Zanabazar himself and there is a small stupa, which, according to legend, was brought to Ulan Bator from Tibet. Also inside this temple are paintings and sculptures of a great national artist. Among them are Ratnasambhava, Mintug, Maidari Manya, Belaya and Green Tara
Outside there is a prayer hall, which is a traditional Mongolian yurt, near which there is a site for tantric rituals, which was used by Luvsanheydav
