The San Marino biennial season was opened in 1956. The history of the Gallery of Contemporary and New Art begins in the same year. In the first exhibition more than 500 artists were represented, and the famous Italian master, Renato Guttuso, was a member of the jury. The exhibition was visited by more than 100 thousand spectators. This experience was repeated two years later, which marked the beginning of the creation of a permanent exhibition site

At the fourth biennale, the chairman of the selection committee Giulio Carlo Argan offered to limit himself to only the most famous artists and sculptors . This reduced the number of exhibitors to 146, but in Among them were Cristo, Doratio, Kunelis, Rotella, Skifano, Turkato . The gallery adhered to this course until the last years, but in the 21st century it began to popularize the work of local authors by providing them with a special exhibition area art . Today the national collection of modern and new art objects counts 750 objects that relate mainly to the beginning of the 20th century . The collection includes drawings, watercolors, sculptures, paintings and photographs received as a gift, or taken directly from artists . Among them you can see the works of many celebrities such as Renato Guttuso, Corrado Cali, Emilio Vedova, Achilles Perilli, Enzo Mari, Enzo Kuci, Sandro Chia, Jean Marco Montesano, Luigi Ontanima .
