Gemeentemuseum was founded in 1935 as a Museum of Modern Art - not only artistic, but also decorative and applied. The museum occupies a building specially built for it in the style of art deco just off the city center. It includes a museum of photography and a special museum of contemporary art, which occupy a separate later building.
The collection of the museum contains the outstanding works of Dutch authors since the 19th century. Her separate pearl is the collection of works by Pete Mondrian, the most extensive in the world: it represents all the periods of the famous abstractionist's work. One of the adornments of the collection is the artist's last work, "Victory of the Boogie-Vuga". In addition to paintings by Dutch artists, the museum also houses masterpieces of geniuses with world names, including Monet, Degas, Picasso, Van Gogh and Kandinsky
The exposition of decorative and applied art items distributed chronologically in seven rooms can be admired by medieval tapestries, items from the era of Louis XV and Louis XVI, a selection of Japanese art objects of the 18th century, as well as skilful leather products and jewelry of the 17th century. In addition, in the museum you can see samples of Delft porcelain, rare Hague silver garments and a wonderful antique doll house
In the print room there are prints of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as posters and drawings from the museum collection, which has about 50 thousand items .The Museum of Contemporary Art (GEM) annually organizes about seven exhibitions of contemporary art by Dutch and world authors . Among the demonstrated works are videos, sculptures, drawings, films and photographs . In the photo museum opened in 2002 ., there is a similar policy in terms of expositions . Photographs that are exhibited here can relate to very different time periods and genres, or foreign artists . Every year the museum receives a significant award, the Silver Chamber, for a photo for the press .
