Puerto Maldonado, formed at the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers, is often called the "world capital of flora and fauna". It is the gateway to the Tambopata National Reserve, a veritable ecological paradise with a huge variety of flora and wildlife of the jungle.
In the immediate vicinity of the reserve, most of the lodges built in the region are located, and the lion's share of the proposed active programs are carried out exactly on its territory. In the city of hotels very little.
No less interesting is the Manu National Park, located at the western border of the department. There are more than 20 thousand varieties of plants, 1200 species of butterflies, 1000 species of birds and 200 species of mammals. Manu is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Indians still live in this area, still maintaining their ancient traditions, culture and speaking the language of their tribe: Machiguengas, Amachuacas, Yaminauas, Piros, Amarakaeris, Uachipaires and Nawas.
