Poland is a country with a rich and long history .There is no city that does not have a centuries-old reserve of legends and true stories about its long past .And even the relatively young city of Katowice, founded in the early 19th century, will be much older than its official age .After all, the settlement in these parts existed since the 14th century, and already in 18 there was the first coal mine .In our time, the much-grown Katowice continues to be the center of the country's coal industry, and its historical baggage is of interest to tourists no less than the boiling modernity .

Cuisine and restaurants in Katowice

This may seem strange for an industrial city (where, it would seem, food should be popular and caloric), but one of the most popular cafes in it is the vegetarian institution "Golden donkey" .The unique spirit of the hippy movement hovers here to this day, and concerts and poetic evenings invariably gather a vast audience here .However, the lack of places where delicious and hearty dishes of national cuisine are served, the city does not experience .Karcma pod Strzechom and Marysin Dwór, decorated in a suitable old rustic style, are always happy to visit .Fans of Italian cuisine will not pass by the trattoria La Grotta, located in the center of the city (on Wawelskaya Street), not far from the pedestrian section, and exotic lovers will undoubtedly be delighted to discover the Chinese restaurant Restauracja a Dong .And do not forget about the neighborhood of the city! Shopping and shopping

To be in the city and not walk through local souvenir shops and shopping centers - it's impossible .We will not try to do this (especially in Katowice, an exceptionally pleasant low price for a lot of goods), but immediately let us know that real shopaholics need to remember these names: Katowice Gallery, Silesium City Center on Khozhovskaya Street and Rava Park "near the city center .Shopping Center Trzy Stawy is also not bad and deserves attention, as well as all kinds of shops in the pedestrian part of the city, selling different souvenirs .

Entertainment, excursions and sightseeing Katowice

30 km south of Katowice is the notorious Auschwitz world-wide. To get from the city to the memorial complex Auschwitz-Birkenau, you can take the train for 4 EUR, the tour is only possible as part of an organized group and costs 10 EUR maximum (if the guide will not tell the story in Polish). Since visiting this mournful place makes a very strong and depressing impression, do not take your children with you.

Katowice itself, despite its modernity and industriality, is an interesting city .Catholic church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (or Mary's church, as it is called by the locals), made in the style of the new Gothic, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in the baroque style and the wooden church of the holy Archangel Michael are beautiful examples of the architecture of past centuries .Of the modern attractions can be distinguished sports and entertainment center "Spodek", a monument to the heroes of the three Silesian uprisings, the monumental concert hall of Silesia .In the city there are many museums: archaeological, historical, museum of antique interiors and even an excellent planetarium and observatory - children especially like it .

Adults, for sure, will be interested in trips to the nearby towns of Gliwice, Raciborz, Sosnowiec, Zabrze, where you can admire the mountains and castles. And, of course, numerous festivals (theatrical, blues and metal-style, cinematographic and folklore) that take place in the city from spring to autumn. But all kinds of exhibitions and concerts are held here all year round, so it's very difficult to call Katowice dull.
