In which months in the year is it open for Transfagarash Road (Transfagarash) in Romania?
Answer
Transfagarash Road or Transfagarash Highway - the mountain road in the Carpathians, passing through the Fagarash mountain range and connecting the Romanian Wallachia and Transylvania. This is the highest mountain road in Romania: its highest point reaches 2034 m.
Transfagarash Road was built in 1970-74. on the orders of N. Ceausescu for the rapid retreat and withdrawal of military equipment into the interior of the country in the event of the invasion of Soviet troops. 6 million tons of dynamite was used for construction in such a short time to break the mountains. Due to the high complexity of the pass, the through traffic on the road between the northern and southern slopes of the Carpathians is open only two months a year: in July and August, and only during the day.
Today Transfagarash Highway is considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world. In its vicinity are other Romanian attractions: the mountain lake and the Bilya waterfall, Lake Vidraru, the largest high mountain lake Livvorul, the ninth largest dam in the world, and the fortress of Poenari, better known as Vlad Dracula's residence.
And in 2009 Transfagarash Road was tested by sports cars leading Top Gear, after which the road was named the best for riding sports cars.
