A bit of history

In the summer months in the resort air there is a calm and cheerful roar generated by a crowd of vacationers, while outside the season Lena returns to her measured life of a quiet fishing port .However, life here was not always so quiet and calm .Over the centuries, Leba struggled with the destructive forces of nature .In the 16th century, after a devastating storm that caused considerable damage, Loeb was transferred from the western bank of the river to its eastern shore .But even then the city remained a victim of mobile dunes, threatening to replace all the city buildings and disrupt shipping .Nevertheless, at the end of the 19th century a new port was built, and the dunes were planted with trees preventing the movement of sand .

Beaches of Leba

The shores of Leba are divided into three sectors: Plaza A, Plaza C and Plaza B. Plaza A is a protected area and due to its convenient location is considered the most popular beach in the city. The infrastructure of the beach is represented by restaurants and shops; for rent hydrocycles, bananas, etc. Plaza C - unguarded territory and the continuation of the beach Plaza A. Plaza C is less popular because of its weak infrastructure, but it is appreciated among lovers of peace and solitude. Plaza B is a protected beach located a little away from the center of Leba. The beach is equipped with children's and volleyball courts, a trampoline.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Leba

Loeb can boast of many architectural and natural attractions. The historical church of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, is notable for the icon of the Mother of God, performed by the representative of the German bohemian Max Pechstein (20th century). At ul. Nadmorska is a building (now the Hotel Neptune), built in 1905 and resembling a medieval castle. Mysteriousness and seriousness of the building is added by its convenient location on the slope of the dune right on the beach. And on ul. Kościuszki 86 preserved the oldest house in Leba.

Among the natural objects of Leba, first of all it is necessary to distinguish the sand spit that separates Sarbskoe Lake from the Baltic Sea. The unique landscape of the Sarba spit is represented by dunes and sandy beaches, and the spit itself is recognized as a reserve and is part of the protected landscape of the coastal zone.

Slowinsky National Park

Another miracle of nature - "mobile dunes" - is open for visits in the Słowinsky National Park, located 8 km west of Leba .The territory of the park, founded in 1967, covers 186 square meters .km, of which 102 square meters .km occupies water space, and 45 square meters .km - woods .The nature protection zone is spread over 56 square meters .km .In 1977, within the framework of UNESCO's "Man and the Biosphere" program, the park was recognized as a biosphere reserve, and in 1995 - the site of the Ramsar Convention .The park is named in honor of the Slavic people - Slovenians, who from time immemorial dwelled in this marshy, inaccessible area on the lake shore .A whole museum is dedicated to this people, its traditions and culture, located in the village of Kluki .

In the past, the area of the park was covered by the waters of the Baltic Gulf, but as a result of the activity of the sea sand dunes formed which, over time, divided the bay and the Baltic Sea. While waves and wind carry sand away from the sea, dunes move at a speed of 3 to 10 meters per year. Some dunes are quite high and reach a 30-meter height. The highest point of the dunes - Rowokol - rises 115 meters above sea level and is an excellent observation point.

There are several lakes on the territory of the park - Lebsko, Gardno and Dolgye Vielkie. Seven rivers cross the park - the largest of them are Leba and Lupava. Of the animals, the most numerous are birds - there are about 257 species here, and all because the park is on the way to their migration. The most common are white-tailed eagles, owls, crows, swans and ducks. Among mammals you can note deer, moose, wild boar and hares. There are about 140 km of hiking trails for visitors here.

Not far from the lakes there are observation towers, and along the paths you can find benches and places for rest.

On the way to the dunes is the former German secret test site of the 1940s, where rockets and various types of bombs were tested. Until now, a bunker has been preserved on the territory of the testing ground, which was later converted into a museum, the exposition of which is represented by photographic materials, old documents and plans for military training. Some of the exhibits of the museum are located in the open air. Not far from the landfill there is an observation tower with a beautiful view of the sea, dunes and lakes.
