A bit of history

During his history Olsztyn was repeatedly destroyed, ruined, passed from ruler to ruler .This significantly hampered its growth and development .And only after 1818 he went beyond his original limits .The 19th century for Olsztyn became a century of prosperity: a hospital was built, very well equipped at that time, the Torun-Konigsberg railway passed through the city and a station was built, a newspaper was launched, the output of which continued until 1939 .Gasification, electrification and telephonization of the city began .This century was marked by the growth of the population: in 1895 in Olsztyn there were 25 000 inhabitants against 6 000 in 1846 .

The end of the 19th century and the 20th century brought to the city new buildings remarkable in terms of architecture and urban development: the New Renaissance Town Hall, the neo-Gothic church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the neo-Romanesque church of St. Joseph. In the 20th century the city grew and prospered before the Second World War, at the end of which many buildings burned in a terrible fire. But the residents of Olsztyn lovingly restored everything that could be restored and enriched the city with new remarkable facilities.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Olsztyn

Today in the city you can see the castle of the Warmia chapter. This is not just a grandiose example of medieval Gothic, but also a place associated with the name of the great Pole - Nicholas Copernicus, who in 1516-1521 was the administrator of the castle. Now here is located the most interesting Museum of Warmia and Mazury. His collection was collected literally bit by bit and now gives a complete picture of the life of the region.

One of the most valuable exhibits is the wall on which the working astronomical table of Nicolaus Copernicus is painted.

The Old Town Hall, from which only one building remained, was restored after the fire of 1945 and handed over to the gallery. There are a series of exhibitions, author's meetings, popular science events. The offices of the City Hall are located in the premises of the New Town Hall.

The Cathedral of St. Jakub almost did not preserve the interior, but its architecture (Gothic style, the 14th century) is very interesting. The most valuable surviving element of interior decoration is the altar in the right nave.

The city still has a medieval layout, and some houses are built on the foundations of destroyed medieval buildings. Although in terms of architecture Olsztyn is quite eclectic, a walk around the city will bring pleasure to lovers of old architecture. Narrow streets breathe history, red tiled roofs make the city look like a fairy-tale decoration, all this contrasts with a fairly standard and unified modern building.
