Add a review about Basilica da Estrela
Basilica was built by order of Queen Maria I of Portugal in fulfillment of the vow after the birth of her son, Prince José. The temple was built from 1779 to 1790 and was completed two years after the sudden death of the heir to the throne.
The majestic structure stands on a hill in the western part of Lisbon, so that the dome can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Stylistically, the church resembles the palace of Mafra - the same later baroque with impregnations already gaining strength of classicism. The church has two bell towers, decorated with statues of saints and allegorical figures. But the main attraction of the Basilica da Estrela is the sculptural group "Christmas", consisting of more than 500 sculptures
