Vyborg Castle is a symbol of Vyborg, which towers over the city from the 13th century. It is called a monument of fortification architecture. The castle was often rebuilt and changed functions. Today there is a museum here, music festivals and knight tournaments are held on the territory
This castle was invented by the Swedish crusaders during the campaign to Novgorod. Six hundred years ago, not only the military, but also merchants, artisans and clergymen lived on the castle island.
During the Northern War, the castle was badly damaged by Russian cannons. Peter the Great ordered to reconstruct the walls to serve the Russian border. In the 19th century, the Hermitage treasures were kept in the castle. Today we can see what the structure looked like at the end of the 19th century
The Museum of Local Lore was opened in the castle in the 60s of the last century. Archaeologists do not cease to conduct research work, they hope to find new artifacts for expositions. In the museum you can learn about the history of the castle, about how Vyborg has changed for 6 centuries, what significance it had for the border, and also learn about the nature of the Karelian Isthmus.
