How to get here

The nearest airport is in Agra, which is 39 km from Fatehpur-Sikri. The railway station is 1 km from the city center.

Tourist buses stop at Fatehpur-Sikri for an hour and a half, which is not enough to explore the city. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Agra (the fare is 17 rupees, travel time is about 1 hour). Buses run every 30 minutes between 7:00 and 19:00. The last bus to Agra leaves from the city bazaar at 19:00.

Auto rickshaws between Agra and Fatehpur-Sikri do not go, but you can catch a taxi for 600 rupees in both directions plus waiting time.

Buses to Bharatpur (15 rupees, 30 min) and Jaipur (80 rupees, 4 h 30 min) regularly go from Fatehpur-Sikri. The bus stop is located near the city bazaar. The prices are indicated in May 2011

In the image of Fatehpur-Sikri, several architectural styles were mixed - during construction, elements of Hinduism and Jainism were used, which were closely intertwined with Islamic trends, and red sandstone served as the main material for the construction.

From the historical point of view, there are several important buildings in the city: Buland Darwaza, is the gateway, one of the largest in the world, also known as the Gate of Splendor. A model of early Mughal architecture with simple ornament, carving with sayings from the Koran and high arches.

The Royal Palace Complex, on the territory of which several beautiful objects are located - Ankh Michauli, the former Treasury building. The walls of the building are decorated with mythical sea creatures, which play the role of amulet. Another structure located nearby is the Jodh Bai's Palace, which combines Hindu and Muslim styles. Nearby there is another palace - Hava Mahal or the palace of wind, which is a structure of stone lattices.

Naubat Khana is a drum house used during ceremonies for announcements about the arrival of the emperor.

Also interesting are the five-storeyed palace of Birbal's Bhavan Palace; the Panch Mahal Palace is a five-story building with columns, from the roof of which a beautiful view of the surroundings opens up; home of Birbal's House, the great vizier who served at the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, as well as the Karawan Serai and the Hiran Minar tower, 21 meters high.

On the territory of the complex is one of the best examples of the Mughal architecture in India, the Jama Masjid Mosque, the construction of which was carried out in 1580-1581. Before the entrance to the mosque there is a marble tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti (Tomb of Salim Chishti) with carved lattices and intricate ornaments.
