Kuril Lake, the third largest in Kamchatka and one of the largest salmon spawning grounds, is located in the territory of the South Kamchatka Wildlife Refuge. The lake occupies a large hollow depth of about 300 m above sea level, surrounded by volcanoes of Ilinsky and Wild Ridge. Bear-fishermen roaming along its shores are a usual phenomenon. They can even be watched after climbing a special tower.

The main "must see" of the Kurile Lake is its islands: The heart of Alaida is a remarkably pink heart-shaped pink island with a huge colony of seagulls, Chayachiy Island and Samang Island. To the south-west from the volcano of Ilyinsky is located the bay Tyoplya, the shore of which is strewn with hot mineral water outlets, which warm the bay water.
