As often happens, the value of Baltiysk does not match the value. In Western Europe, this is common, but for Russia - a rarity. It is a small city by Russian standards - only 32 thousand people, but all neighboring countries fought for it for many centuries, and now there is the largest Russian naval base.
Baltiysk has long been a closed military city (by the way, in many respects that's why he was so small), but now it is quite possible to go - say, from Kaliningrad. Walk around the military, but still the port city, see the almost intact (because of the closed nature) of the Baltic Spit or historical sights - because of the defensive value, castles and fortresses were built by all the owners of these lands in turn, and a fairly large part of them survived.

A bit of history
The first village (it was called Peel) appeared here in the middle of the 13th century, and later became a part of Prussia. In the 17th century Sweden beat him, but then Peel again returned to Prussia under the name of Pillau. It was also captured once by the French and Russians, but not for long.
Later the city became part of Germany and remained in it until the end of World War II, when it was transferred to the Soviet Union by the terms of the peace treaty. The Soviet Union used the port as a closed naval base
Such an abundance of seizures was caused by a good geographical location - the city is located on the shores of the Baltic Strait, which gave large ships the opportunity to call at its port. It was the main seaport in this part of the Baltic Sea coast,
Pillau flourished until 1901, when the navigable Canningburg (now Kaliningrad) sea channel was opened. Large ships began to go to a much larger Konigsberg, bypassing Pillau, and soon he became obsolete.
After the war, Pillau became part of the Soviet Union. It was immediately used as a closed naval base and renamed Baltiysk. The city has been opened only after perestroika,
- Find a piece of amber on the shore
- Go to the Baltic Spit
- View the Naval Cathedral - only at the sea there are such.
How to get to Baltiysk
You can get to Baltiysk by train from Kaliningrad or by bus from Kaliningrad or Svetlogorsk.
But you can get there and bypass Kaliningrad - the city has a large passenger ferry terminal. There are ferries from St. Petersburg, Gdynia, Karlshamn and Klaipeda. A ferry from St. Petersburg will be the best option if you do not want to bother with crossing the border - visas, control, etc.
There are also shuttle buses running around the city and there is a small local ferry to the Baltic Spit.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Baltiysk
The city is pretty many historical buildings, mostly military. The oldest is the ruins of the castle of Lochstedt, built in the 13th century. Once it housed a master's residence, an amber room (for storage and weighing of mined amber) and much more. Only a part of the outer wall is preserved.
Another old attraction of Swedish construction is the citadel "Pillau". It was built much later, in the 17th century, and it remained fairly well preserved. Survived walls, bastions, ravelins, several main buildings. The military services were located in the interior, but now the branch of the Museum of the Baltic Fleet is opened in the castle, and now it can be studied not only from the outside.
You can also see the forts built between the 17th and 19th centuries. Preserved three forts - East, West and Fort Stille. Fort West is on the Baltic Spit
There are a few smaller sights preserved. You can see the infantry barracks, the Naval Cathedral and several other buildings of the 19th and 20th century buildings. There are a lot of memorials in the city.
In Baltiysk there is the Museum of the Baltic Fleet. The Baltic Fleet was founded in 1703 and museum exhibits can be found from this time on, and an exhibition of military equipment is organized at the site near the museum.

Modern Baltiysk
Now Baltiysk is part of the Kaliningrad region, enjoys all its economic privileges, it has a large port and satisfied many tourists (mostly local). But in the city there really is something to see.
In general, this is a pretty seaside port city where the main base of the Baltic Fleet is located, and besides it there is a large international cargo port and an international passenger ferry terminal
The city is actively being built and developing - civilian ports are completely new. Unlike many other small Russian towns, it does not decrease the population. This is an active, lively city, which now has many amenities for tourists and new small hotels.
Ecotourism
Near Baltiysk for many years the natural German seaside resort of Neuhauser was located. Now here is the settlement Mechnikovo. The main direction in the region now is ecological tourism
The most interesting place in this regard is the Baltic Spit. Russia owns 35 km of it. In structure it resembles the famous Curonian Spit, but is much less enriched and is neither a reserve nor an object from the UNESCO World Heritage List. Most of the spit is covered with pine forests, dunes and sandy beaches, you can swim, many rare birds. The entrance is now free, you can get there by car ferry from Baltiysk, which runs on average once every 3 hours.
Neighborhoods Baltiysk
Nearby are the Baltic Forest and wetlands on the shore - river floodplains, many beaches (by the way, Baltiysk itself is famous for its beaches - more than 40 km along the coastline around the city). There are moose, deer, roe deer, martens, caresses, foxes, and sometimes there are wolves (they are still allowed to hunt here), many rare birds.
From Baltiysk it is convenient to go to Kaliningrad - there are many historical buildings, and you can also ferry somewhere in Europe - Poland or Sweden.
