Picturesque riverine Russian town, many of which have been preserved in the European part of Russia . If you were fond of Ostrovsky's plays at school, then Volsk will become a real discovery for you - the Russian merchant's spirit and architecture of the 19th century are perfectly preserved here (the city itself was founded in 1690) . Walking through the lonely streets of this provincial township with old stone houses, it's easy to imagine how Katerina from "The Bridegroom" rushes headlong down the precipice, and on a passing ship the next Karandyshev is about to be shot it's wrong wife .

How to get there
The easiest way to get to Volsk is by intercity bus from Saratov or Balakovo. You can also take the train, you just need to take the Balakovo-Moscow train. Earlier in the city there was also an airport of local air lines, but in connection with its unprofitability it was closed down.
Around and around
Most of Volsk is located in the basin, which is surrounded on 3 sides by chalky mountains, surrounding the city, like an amphitheater. The area itself is covered with forests. The forests on the steep banks of the Volga in combination with the old architecture look very picturesque and attract tourists from the neighboring regions: in the summer to the beach and in winter for ski holidays

Entertainments, excursions and sights of Volsk
Architectural monuments include not only houses of well-to-do merchants, but also interesting modern industrial complexes . We are talking about several cement plants . It should be noted that the Volsky cement was famous for the whole of Russia and the CIS, and the first plant was laid back in 1897 (Volsky factory "Bolshevik") . The second, third and fourth factories were built in 1900, 1912 and 1913 respectively . Therefore, industrial dwellers, house managers and warehouses are built in the style of "industrial modernity", from one type of which the directors of "Sherlock Holmes" with Downey-ml . would have a heart attack of envy, and large developers would probably have fought with each other for the right to buy out similar buildings for elite loft apartments .However, unfortunately, the Volsky factories are not located in Moscow or even in St. Petersburg, so three of the four plants are now closed and developers are not interested . However, at least one can admire the intricate architecture .
In addition , it is worth looking at the former two-story Gostiny Dvor, located on Torgovaya Square. This unique building in the style of Russian classicism was built in the early 19th century. Other interesting places are the ancient grain barns, benches and warehouses
Finally, no merchant city could do without a suitable temple, and Volsk is no exception - the stone cathedral of John the Baptist was built in the 1740s, after which it was built one. As a result, from the side of the Volga River travelers appeared absolutely amazing: on the hills above the trading rows and merchant houses towered a whole church ensemble of several cathedrals that were visible for many kilometers. Now on the site of the Cathedral of John the Baptist - a department store, which was built in the late 1960's
