Basilica of San Marino (or Basilica del Sante) - the main church of the city, dedicated to the same-named saint. It is a neoclassical building, the portico of which supports eight columns of the Corinthian order, six in front and one on each side. Above the columns you can read the inscription in Latin: "To Saint Marina, the patron of freedom, from the senate and the people." In 2008, the basilica, as part of the old center of San Marino, was listed by UNESCO on the World Heritage List.

The history of the basilica begins back in the 4th century, when a church was built in this place in honor of St. .Marina.By the 19th century, the original church had fallen into decay and could not be restored, so in 1807 .it was demolished entirely .For the construction of a new temple in San Marino, an architect from Bologna, Achille Serra .Construction began in 1826 g ., and it lasted 12 years .The massive belltower, originally distinguished by the features of the Romanesque style, was rebuilt from the original, 17th century .In 1982, .Pope John Paul II visited the basilica to worship the relics of the saint .

Under the altar there is a small urn with a part of the relics of the saint who were found at the end of the 16th century.

Before entering the temple, on the left, you can see the newest baptistery, created by Amos Lucetti-Gentillyoni. The font was part of the ancient church "pieve", and the cornerstone was carved by Aldo Volpini.

Basilica from the inside consists of three naves, separated from each other by 16 columns of the Corinthian order .The columns are arranged in a semicircle .Inside there are 7 altars .The main altar of the church is decorated with a sculptural image of St. .Marina, performed by Adamo Tadolini, one of the most talented students of Canova .Under the altar there is a small urn with a part of the relics of the saint who were found at the end of the 16th century .Another part of the relics is on the island of Rab, in Dalmatia, where .Marin was born .To the right of the altar stands a marble monument in which there is a reliquary of gold and silver, created in 1602 g ., with the top of the skull of the saint .

One of the most striking features of the interior of the basilica can be considered the regent's throne, which was created in the early 17th century .It is located to the left of the main altar .And in the right side-chapel there is a small altar dedicated to Mary Magdalene, where you can see the painting of Elisabetta Sirani's work Noli me tangere (1638-1665 biennium) .In the interior you can see the murals of the masters of the Guercino school "The Holy House of Loreto" .On the altars of the right nave murals are of lesser historical value: it is the phenomenon of St. .Agates "by Oreste Monacelli (1897 g .), a copy of the "Madonna Folinho" brush Pietro Tonnini and "Saint Sebastian", an imitation of the work of Titian, performed by an unknown artist .Also in the basilica there is an organ of 1835 g .work by Giacomo Bazzani .

The image of the basilica can be seen on the 10-cent coin of the EU currency of the San Marino release.

To the right of the basilica is the church of San Pietro, which was erected in the 7th century and then rebuilt around 1826 .To it you can go up the stairs, built into the belfry of the basilica .Initially, the chapels of the church were carved into the rock, and in them you can see two niches .Local residents believe that in these niches there was a box of st. .Marina and St. .Leo, and here the saints worked wonders .The marble altar of the 17th century was donated to the church by the Roman musician Antonio Tedeschi in 1689 .The most visible part of it is the statue of St. .Petra, masterpiece of the work of sculptor Enrico Saroldi .In the year 1914 .under the church, a crypt was made, and in it was placed an urn, in which for many centuries the bones of a saint were kept .
