Inquisitor's chair, a church, a guillotine, an exhaust bench - these are just a few of the items that were used in the Middle Ages for torture .The San Marino Museum of Torture has collected more than 100 instruments invented by mankind in order to cause physical pain and kill .Some of these items are original and dated by the 16th-17th centuries, others - reconstructions of the 19-20th centuries .This museum is definitely worth a visit, as compared to other museums of similar themes in San Marino you can see lesser known tools .For example, the skin tearing tool "Cat-Freshener" or "Fork of the Heretics" .Next to each torture weapon is an explanation of the principle of its work, including in English .The study of a small museum will take 15-20 minutes, but it will be quite a busy time for a person with imagination .
Human skeletons, "Iron Maiden", all kinds of vice, wooden stake for nasazhivaniya, a tool for folding the neck, masks for infusion into the ears and mouth of something melted ... On the walls are hung old paintings depicting what visitors lack imagination at a glance on this or that device. In this museum it's easy to believe that in the Middle Ages violence was normal and was considered a kind of entertainment. And rejoice at the fact that we do not live at that time.
Another exposition devoted to torture is arranged in the gallery of wax figures. In the gallery itself there are figures of bright characters of Italian (and not only) history, including Giuseppe Garibaldi and Vittorio Emmanuele, Jackie Kennedy and the Pope, Mussolini and Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte, etc. In total, 40 historic scenes were reconstructed for the exposition about 100 famous people in costumes. A separate section is dedicated to opera figures, and a separate section is dedicated to torture instruments.
In the latter one can see a variety of medieval objects designed to make a prisoner talk, including a shameful pillar, a vise, pads, a rat cage, a tortured collar. It is possible to compose an idea of the mechanisms of work of all this thanks to the manikins simulating the tortured.
The Torture Museum is located in a small medieval house, right behind the wall, in the city center and just 10 m from the main entrance gate .It is easy to find by climbing the stairs .A stone's throw from the museum is the monastery of St. .Kiara, completely renovated: it is now open University of San Marino and the Museum of Expatriation .The Order of the Clarisks moved from here to a new monastery in 1971 ., but a small garden in the courtyard, courted by nuns, is still preserved .A good option for people with a delicate nervous organization to recover after visiting the Museum of Torture .
