The National Museum of San Marino was opened to the general public in 1899. Then it was located in the Palazzo Valloni, but in March 2001 moved to another historic building in the historic center of the city, Palazzo Pergami -Beluzzi. Today, the museum has a collection of nearly 5,000 exhibits, many of which are national treasures.
The largest part of the museum's collection is devoted to archeology. The archaeological collection contains finds that date from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Among them - the famous bronze statues of "Tanakkya" and the golden stallion from the Treasury of Domagnano. Also in the museum you can see the paintings and sculptures of the work of Guercino, the paintings of the 17th century and the ancient coins of San Marino (1865-1938) along with artifacts from Ancient Egypt, Etruscan and Romanesque.
The rich and diverse collection of the museum is largely due to private donations from around the world . The main beneficiary of the museum was Luigi Chibrario, Italian minister and consultant to the Government of San Marino since 1862 . Po essence Count Chibrario became the first donor for the museum, giving him old bibliographic documents from his private collection . According to his example, many Italian intellectuals and political figures passed valuable exhibits to the museum . The time of the museum's foundation coincided with the revival of the nation and the most ancient republic in the world, and, helping the museum, the donors seem to express their admiration for this .
The State Museum is small, and it can be easily circumvented in an hour and a half. The museum's expositions are thematically distributed over the floors. On the first one there is an archeological collection, on the second - a collection of art objects of the republic, on the third - only donations. In the basement there are donated archeological finds and a numismatic collection donated to the museum
Among the most remarkable exhibits that can be seen in the whole museum are the remains of the design of the ancient basilica with the 16th century polyptych by Francesco Menzocchi; objects from the monastery of the Order of the Clarisques of the 17th century; paintings and sculptures Pompeo Batoni, Elizabetta Sirani, Stefano Galetti; as well as works of art and drawings by artists from other countries, including masterpieces by Michele Giamono, Baccio Bandinelli, Tiburcio Passerotti, Bernardo Strozzi
