St. Martin's Cathedral began to build in the VIII century as part of the city's fortifications, and was only consecrated in 1452. This is the largest church in Bratislava and one of the largest in Slovakia. Its appearance resembles the famous Viennese church. His quadrangular tower is crowned with a helmet with a gilded crown of St. Stephen on the roof, symbolizing the coronation status of the cathedral.
In 1535, Bratislava became the capital of Hungary, and in 1563 in the cathedral crowned the first Hungarian king. From then until 1830, St. Martin's Cathedral remained coronation: 10 kings, 8 royal wives and the ruling empress Maria Theresa were crowned in the walls of the cathedral. Since 2008, St. Martin's Cathedral has become the cathedral of the archdiocese of Bratislava. The building and its decoration are neo-Gothic.
