Zvolensky Castle is located in Central Slovakia, in the town of Zvolen at the confluence of two rivers - Groton and Slatina. The fortress stands in the center of the city, as if towering above it.
Zvolensky Castle is a historical monument of Slovakia. In spite of numerous perestroika, it has remained in excellent condition, and its appearance has changed little. The last major reconstruction of the building was carried out in the middle of the last century Now the Slovak National Gallery is located in Zvolensky Castle. On the ground floor there is an exhibition of Gothic art, and the second floor is given for the works of European artists of the 16th and 18th centuries - paintings, graphics, sculptures, applied art.
Zvolensky the castle was built in the second half of the 14th century, during the Turkish wars it was assigned a strategic role in the defense line. In peacetime, when Zvolen became a quiet and provincial town, the castle became a summer and hunting residence for the nobility. The building has a gallery with portals all around the perimeter. The castle has a closed inner courtyard and a spacious hall with columns, once knights gathered there.
In the 16th century the originally modest building was rebuilt and decorated with rich murals. Do not forget about security - the castle has new bastions, loopholes, corner towers. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the chapel and the main hall were decorated in baroque style.
Practical information
The entrance to the castle is free. Only on Mondays visitors will find the doors closed. The rest of the days the castle is open from 10:00 to 17:30. The last visitors are allowed no later than 16:45.
There are trains from Bratislava to the town of Zvolen, and can also be reached by car. The castle, we recall, is in the center of the town. Practically all routes of public transport one way or another pass by it.
