Lake Tanganyika lies within the boundaries of the East African fault - one of the greatest geological phenomena on Earth. This lake is the second in the world after Baikal for deep water (1470 m). And also, like Baikal, it is distinguished by extremely transparent water, which allows to see the bottom at a depth of 33 meters. In addition, Tanganyika is considered to be the longest lake in the world - 708 km, width - 80 km.
The lake lies on the border of four states: Tanzania, Burundi, Congo and Zambia. The river Kalambo, flowing into the lake in the south, is the boundary between the states of Tanzania and Zambia. Here is the second largest (after Victoria) waterfall in Africa.
The area around the lake was originally the residence of the Ha tribe, which migrated here centuries ago from West Africa and settled along the shores and the surrounding Gombe region.
How to get here
Two hours of summer separates the international airport of Dar es Salaam from the lake, 20 minutes drive from the airport of Kigoma.
Climate of Tanganyika
The best time to visit the park is from May to October (dry season) for hiking, as well as a light rainy season in October - November.
Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Tanganyika
In the lake there are hippopotamuses, crocodiles, many waterfowl. 98% of the lake cichlids of the whole world live here. And also: seven varieties of crabs, five species of bivalve mollusks, half of the gastropod mollusks and eleven crustaceans. Simply put, about 350 species of rare unique fish. It is not surprising that sport fishing of Nile perch, Goliath fish and others is popular here.
From the territory of Tanzania, two national parks are adjacent to the lake: the Gombe Stream reserve and the Makhale mountain reserve.
