The lost miracle - that's what the guide will call poetically, what you will see on the site of the once majestic temple of Artemis of Ephesus. The spectacle is rather pathetic - almost nothing remained from the ruins, except for one column recovered from the debris. But there were 127 of them! Each 18 meters high is a gift from one of the 127 kings.
The temple, in its beauty and grandeur to which there were no equal, as historians wrote, is one of the seven wonders of the world. It was located in Greek Ephesus. Today it is the city of Selcuk, in the province of Izmir, in Turkey. The first temple in honor of the goddess of hunting Artemis was built in the middle of the 6th century BC. According to legend, in the year 356 BC, a fire occurred at night - the citizen of Ephesus set the temple on fire to become famous.

By the beginning of the 3rd century BC, the temple was completely restored. Money for the construction of a new wonder of the world was singled out by Alexander the Great. The previous plan was maintained, only the building was raised on a high stepped base. One of the columns was made by the famous sculptor of the time Skopas. It is assumed that the altar is the work of the sculptor Praxitel.
In 263 the sanctuary of Artemis was plundered by the Goths . At the time of the Emperor Theodosius the First all pagan cults were banned, therefore the temple of Artemis in Ephesus was closed . Marble cladding was taken from it by local residents for their buildings, the columns began to fall, and their fragments sucked the swamp on which the temple stood . Even the place was gradually forgotten . The English archaeologist Wood was able to find traces of the best temple of Ionia in 1869 . The whole foundation of the sanctuary was opened only in20th century . And under it were found traces of the temple burned by Herostratus . The wreckage of the columns decorated with reliefs are now in the British Museum .
