Its the name Deribasovskaya (originally Italian La strata Ribas) was received in honor of Don Jose de Ribas, a Spanish nobleman, and later a Russian military and statesman. In Russia, he is better known as Joseph (Osip) Mikhailovich Deribas, the founder of Odessa and the Odessa port. At the very beginning of Deribasovskaya there is a monument to de Ribas, where he is depicted leaning on a shovel and with a plan of Odessa in his hand.

Deribassovskaya street in Odessa is not very long, less than a kilometer, but incredibly famous and noteworthy.
