This monument is a visiting card of the city. The Frenchman, who has done much more for Odessa than any Ukrainian ruler or official, is proud of every Odessa citizen. The list of his merits totals.
After the death of Richelieu, twice the Prime Minister of France, the money for his monument was collected by the whole city. The sculpture was cast in bronze and installed in Odessa in April 1828
By the way, the French also took part in the creation of the monument, albeit indirectly. During the shelling of the city by the Anglo-French squadron during the Crimean War, the core was damaged by a bas-relief on the basement. Later this core was mounted in the pedestal.
"Ask the Duke" - so the people of Odessa answer a very difficult question. On the Day of Laughter, a cape and a clown wig are worn on the monument, and during the jazz festival the Duke of Richelieu is make-up for Duke Ellington

Odessites also often say "Look at the Duke from the second hatch" or "Look at Duke with a hatch. " If you do what local people advise, then you should look at the monument from the water hatch to your left, then the scroll and folds of Duke's clothes will become extremely similar to the male genitalia. Igor Gankevich in the song "Walking Through Odessa" has even a couple of stanzas: "Smiling Duke, I walk along the boulevard; I do not look at it from the second hatch ... "

On the way up the Potemkin Stairs, the founder of the city, Duke de Richelieu, meets at the top of the crowd, near the monument there is always a bunch of tourists and visitors who want to be photographed against the background of the business card of Odessa. From this square there are three directions for walking, as in a fairy tale: on the left you will go - in the park you will get, on the right - the legendary Primorsky Boulevard, directly - the monument to Catherine and the city center. For very tired travelers it is suggested to ride ... Read full review

This monument is located in one of the busiest places in Odessa. Around him always crowds the crowd. Someone is walking along the Seaside Boulevard, someone conquers the Potemkin Stairs, someone is going to use the funicular to go down to the Seaport. We walked here very often and each time observed the same picture - tourists tirelessly attack the monument in order to perform a certain ritual that brings happiness and luck. And in the crowd works the so-called bad phone ... Read the full review

I came to Ukraine this summer to visit my friend who lives in Odessa! She, of course, agreed to show me local sights. We arrived at the Maritime Station and began a leisurely walk. A monument to the famous Duke de Richelieu in Odessa is proudly adorned near the Marine Station! He is tall and majestic! It is on the pedestal, in one hand the Duke has a papyrus, and in the other, a small pouch with coins. There is a belief that you need to touch the bag and order a wish and it's necessary ... Walking around Odessa along Primorsky Boulevard you can see a unique monument that will be interesting to consider from all its sides, as it looks original. It is a statue of the Duke (Duke) de Richelieu, a Frenchman who emigrated during the Great French Revolution to Russia and lived in Odessa. Under him, Odessa began to actively build and was exempted from paying taxes. The statue of Duyuk stands on the so-called pedestal, which displays high reliefs, symbolizing wealth, commerce, agriculture .... Read full review
