The National Museum of History of Ukraine is the leading historical museum of the country, since 1944 located in Kiev, on the Starokievo mountain. Ethnographic and archaeological finds, paintings and sculptures, numismatic collections, and early printed books are kept here. The museum building is a monument of architecture, it was erected in 1937-1939 by the architect Karakis.
By the number and significance of collections, the National Museum history of Ukraine is one of the leading in the country. Its funds number more than 800 thousand unique monuments of history and culture, valuable collections of archeology, numismatics, cold and firearms, ethnography, glassware and porcelain. About ten thousand exhibits are collections of paintings, drawings and sculptures. Also there is a collection of documents from 15-21 centuries, Cossack attributes, departmentals, letters, letters of hetmans and Cossack petty officers
