A bit of history

Father Sylvester Veles de Escalante, a Spanish Franciscan monk, is considered the first European to arrive in this area in 1776. Originally, the city was called Fort Utah, founded in 1849 by 33 Mormon families from Salt Lake City, but was renamed in 1850 in honor of Etienne Provost, pioneer and French-Canadian trapper.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Provo

One of the true ways to not miss the city's central attractions is to go on a historic pedestrian tour in Provo. In its course, you will inspect interesting old buildings - for example, the district court, built in an antique likeness with a triangular portico and a colonnade - and not too tired. The tour goes without a guide: you just get a booklet and a traffic map in the tourist center.

One of the most beautiful buildings of Provo was the Tabernacle, built in 1898, with turrets in the corners and high lancet windows. Alas, in 2010 a terrible fire destroyed the building almost completely. Works on its restoration were started immediately, and in their course the most modern technologies were used. For several months the building was "floating" 12 m above the ground on metal pegs. Mormons at all costs like to restore the old building, and not build a new one, and the result is already close.

A big role in the city and its cultural life is played by the University of Brigham .Tourists can visit the university campus and go to the art galleries - the Art Museum and the Harris Center for Fine Arts .The former usually holds frequently changing world-class exhibitions, in addition to the permanent exposure .Here you can take an audio guide or even book a tour with an associate professor .Harris Center, which is right next door, includes galleries of student art .The permanent exhibition "Education in Zion" is open in the building of Joseph Fielding Smith, also exhibitions - arts and historical - often take place in the university library .

2 things to do in Provo:
  1. Take a picture of the huge Y on the mountain.
  2. To get to one of the "concerts on the roof", which are free on the first Friday of each month from May to October at the top of the public parking in the city center. Concerts are accompanied by a spectacle of sunset over the valley, and local restaurants deliver food from the bottom to the site.

Of particular interest is the University Museum of Life Sciences, where you can examine stuffed animals in their natural environment .This is a very large collection of animals from around the world, including unusual ones - such as the liger, the giant grizzly and the huge elephant Humphrey .Public shows with live animals take place in the atrium in the week .The University Museum of Paleontology is small, but here you can see the fossilized remains of dinosaurs and a good Jurassic exhibition .And in the Museum of Peoples and Cultures, even smaller in size, you can learn more about the culture of Native Americans .

Life in Provo is subordinated to the Mormon Church - it is one of the most conservative and "right" cities in the United States. Therefore, all commercial establishments, including even many gas stations, are closed on Sundays.

Beautifully the building of the public library of the city, the former Brigham Youth Academy, built in 1892. The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Its collection numbers more than 277,000 media.

The historic print museum of Crandall is an impressive and interesting place .There is a copy of the printing press of Gutenberg and other historical machine tools, as well as old publications .The Museum of Pioneers has a large collection of artifacts associated with the period of first settlers, and right next door is the Village of Pioneers .It consists of original houses of first settlers, in which volunteers work, dressed as centuries ago .Another specific museum dedicated to the Mormon-Mexican history is a small branch of the museum in Mexico City .Mostly its exposition consists of copies, but there are also several interesting things: for example, church utensils .

View from the mountain Y

The Mormon temple, built in 1969, stands on top of a hill that faces Provo. Due to its unique form, the temple received the colloquial nickname "space rocket". His spire, now white, was originally gold, and the statue of Moroni was added in the 2000s. Inside the temple only Mormons are allowed, but anyone can walk in a beautiful garden with flower beds and fountains. From the garden behind the temple, you can enjoy a nice view of the Utah Valley.

Neighborhood Provo

One of the most popular excursions outside the city limits is the ascent to Y. The mountain trail starts from the parking lot and stretches almost 2 km to the mountain base next to the huge Y-letter that was placed here more than 100 years ago as a sign of the university. The height of this letter is 116 m, width is 40 m - this is even more than the "Hollywood Sign" in Los Angeles. It takes about 45 minutes to get to Y, and from there you will have a good view of the valley and the lake.

Directly to the east of the city is the beautiful mountain ridge of Wasatch. Hiking, camping and skiing are popular here. Here is the famous scenic road "Alpine loop", which surrounds the mountain Timpanogos, passing through the canyons of Provo and American Fork. The road is open from May to October.

Tympanogh mountain itself is also worth attention. It is located north of Provo and its height is more than 3500 m.
Here - one of the few places in Utah, in which the snow never melts, and thanks to this the mountain became popular for hikers.
In addition, on the mountain there is a cave of Timpanogos, consisting of three, united with each other, - a national monument. In the caves you can admire the unusual geological formations of different colors.

The Bridal-Vale waterfall ("bridal veil") is also located just outside the city, it is easily accessible by car. On the footpath you can go down to the bowl of the waterfall, and across the river above it a wooden bridge will be thrown. Past the waterfall stretches the species pass of Provo Canyon, which is popular among fans of bicycles or hiking. It will lead you to the state park of the Deer Stream, a famous place for swimming and boating.

The Utah Lake National Park is located to the west of the city. Utah is the largest freshwater lake in the state, and it is great for fishing, boating, parasailing and camping. Marina Lake is very romantic looking at sunset and bordered by a colony of wild birds. On the lake you can ride a jet boat, from which you can see wonderful views of the valley.
