Thanjavur (Thanjur) is a large regional center in the state of Tamil Nadu, located 55 km from Trichy and just 200 km south of Chennai. Since ancient times, this city is known as an important political, religious, cultural center of South India. The name of Tanjavur is related to the legend of the demon Tanjan, who terrorized the district many years ago. When he was caught and sentenced to death, as a last wish he asked to be named after his city. Tanjavur is also often called the "rice bowl of Tamiladu."
Thanks to the Brihadeshwara temple - one of the wonders of the ancient South Indian temple architecture - Tanjavur has become a major pilgrim center of the country.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Tanjavur
The temple of Brhadeshwara Mandir (aka Rajarajeshwaram, Peruvudaryar Coil or simply Big Temple) was built by King Rajaraj Chol I in 1002-1010 .Unlike other great temples of South India, its highest construction is not the gopurama (gate tower), and the vamana is the tower of the main sanctuary, which reaches 63 m in height .The tower is crowned with a dome carved from a solid granite block weighing about 80 tons .The largest in India statue of Nandi (the sacred bull of Shiva) weighing 25 tons is installed on the territory of the temple, also carved from a monolithic boulder .
In the temple there are three entrances - the central one, decorated with gigantic metal dvuhrapala (gate keepers), and two side ones. The temple is open from 6:00 to 20:00 (break 13: 00-15: 00). Admission is free.
At the beginning of the circular round of the temple there is a historical museum that keeps fragments of murals and 108 poses of Shiva.
The Royal Palace occupies a vast territory to the northeast of the temple (50 INR, right to photograph 30 INR, work time 9: 00-18: 00). The ticket allows you to visit the palace, Durbar Hall (reception hall) and the bell tower.
