The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation is the oldest public museum in Latvia and the Baltics and one of the oldest in Europe. The basis of the museum's exposition is a collection of natural, artistic and historical items of the Riga doctor Nikolaus von Himsel, after whose death it was donated to Riga. The collection of the museum is represented by more than 500 thousand items, and the museum itself has three branches: the Mentsendorf house and the Latvian photography museum located in Riga, and the Ainaži seaworthy school in Ainazi
