In the very near future any foreign citizen will be able to acquire a Maltese passport on legal grounds - the corresponding bill was approved by the parliament last week.

Officially, citizenship will be issued for "investing in local economy", although it is quite obvious that this is the most ordinary free tranche to the state treasury. The issue price is 650 thousand EUR. In addition, the "buyer" of the passport will receive a significant discount on the acquisition of citizenship for their next of kin - only 25 thousand EUR per person. Of course, candidates will undergo a strict check on the lack of criminal record and non-participation in various questionable cases.

According to preliminary calculations, the government of Malta will replenish the treasury by 30 million EUR only in the first year of the law. In the future, the number of applicants for Maltese citizenship risks to grow to 200-300 people annually. The initiative already has opponents in the person of the Nationalist Party, which promised to abolish the "anti-civil" law in the first place in case of coming to power.
