International group of archaeologists discovered in the east of Mexico an unknown to date settlement of Maya, which blossomed in the 6th-9th centuries AD.
@ Located in the state of Campeche, the Maya city was hidden in a hard-to-reach forest for more than ten centuries. Finally, two weeks ago, a unique site was found by the participants of an archaeological expedition, financed by National Geographic, the Austrian company Villas and the Slovenian company Ars Longa. The discovery became possible due to aerial photography and stereoscopic techniques
The discovered Mayan settlement occupies an area of 22 hectares and is a set of pyramidal structures up to 23 meters in height. In addition, areas for ball games, squares, remains of monuments and residential areas were found on its territory.
After the completion of the research work, the Mayan settlement will be open to tourists. However, this moment will not come soon: there is absolutely no necessary infrastructure in such a remote region.
