Sohar is the historical homeland of Sinbad-Mariner. Situated 230 km from the capital, this ancient port city was once the capital of the country. His name he received from the great-grandson of the biblical Noah - Sohar. Today the city attracts tourists with its large market ("bough") with a variety of goods. Also known is Fort Sokhara, whose four-tiered walls and five towers stand out in the distance, is a truly impressive sight.

Beaches of Sohara
The long sandy beach of Sohar is never crowded with sunbathing tourists or noisy local companies. The water is very clean, but the shade may not be enough: rare "mushrooms" are more likely for picnic gatherings of large Oman families than for individual rest. Be sure to remember the strong ocean currents and not swim away. The island of Sawadi, near Sokhara, is not without reason a paradise for divers.
Sahara's entertainment, excursions and attractions
The main city attraction is the fort, whose history dates back to the 1st c. The current construction was erected in the 13th and 14th centuries. This is the only fortress in Oman with whitewashed walls. From the top of the fort there is a breathtaking view of the harbor and the residential areas of Sohar. Also, it is worth to go on an excursion to the traditional village of Hibi and the al-Gudafari oasis (63 km from the city).
