Add a review about the castle of Sintra
Palacio da Pena Castle, which stands on a hill near the town of Sintra, is not just one of the most grandiose castles of the country, but also one of its main attractions. It is listed in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List as the best example of Romanticism in architecture. Today it is here that the most important official events are held at the governmental level.
It is noteworthy that once this grandiose structure was only a small chapel built on the site where the Virgin appeared to the inhabitants of the city. Later, a monastery was erected here, where no more than twenty monks lived. This monastery suffered from lightning and was destroyed during a major earthquake in the late 18th century
And only in the first half of the 19th century did King Ferdinand order the restoration of the monastery and build a palace next to it that became the summer royal residence. Many architectural solutions and decor ideas belong to the monarch himself. Impressive and the palace park, on the vast territory of which dozens of species of exotic plants and wild animals were collected. By the way, the palace is connected to the park by secret tunnels.
